It was a gray overcast day in Tuscany and I was stuck in the back seat of a car driven by a mad man who was zipping around the Tuscan hills like we were racing home to witness the birth of his first child. But the only birth we would witness that day during this company road rally through Italy was the one that occurred within me.....I would name the newborn: "Brunello di Montalcino"!
The Day Was March 15, 2002
We would approach the majestic castle atop the hill town. Covered in misty fog we noticed a light on within it's ancient stones - what could lie amidst it's walls? We forged a path direct to the light with nary a patron in sight to uncover it's mystery. What would reside inside would be of all things - a wine shop! When the four of us entered the establishment it made five in the room. The attendant at the shop seemed roused to have some guests - so a few free tastings were headed our way. It would be the best investment that shop worker at La Fortezza every made for the mysterious town atop the clouded hill called "Montalcino". My palate - that until that point had only caressed $6 bottles of White Zinfandel - was suddenly awakened by a 1995 Banfi Poggio all'Oro Riserva.
The Obsession Was Birthed.
